The Libertines
Carl Barat & Dirty Pretty Things

The Libertines
12 March 1979 - Peter Doherty is born in Newcastle.

1980’s - Peter Doherty grew up a son of Irish Catholic Army Major Peter Doherty Senior. They move around wherever Peter Senior is stationed. Peter Senior nicknamed his son Billy Bilo.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260
From Observer Music Monthly, Sunday Issue, 14 October 2007 :
“His father, also called Peter, was a major in the army. This meant young Peter, his mother Jacqueline and his sisters Amy Jo and Emily moved around a lot between Britain and Germany when he was growing up.”

1990’s - Car Barat travels with his Huguenot mother Chrissie Barat between various communes, hippy squalors and travelling sites in France & England. Carl’s nicknames include Biggles and Pigman.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260

1991 - 12 Year Old Peter Doherty starts to think of music & lyric ideas.
From Q Magazine, September issue 2007 interview with Peter:
“What was the first song you ever wrote?
Honestly? It's dead embarassing. Billy The Hamster.
How old were you?
Twenty-one (smiles). No, about 12. I just wrote it in my head.
About a real hamster called Billy?
No, I wasn't allowed one. I think I was promised a hamster, so I went and bought the cage and the sawdust and all the things, hoping that they'd get the hint and buy me a hamster. By the time they did, I was a bit old. And anyway, its name was Reindeer.
Was that when you realised that you could write songs?
Er... (bats eyelids vacantly) dunno.”

1997
1997 - Carl Barat dates Amy Jo Doherty at Brunel University & meets her younger brother Peter Doherty.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260
From Q Magazine, September issue 2007 interview with Peter:
“When did you start playing guitar then?
I picked up guitar quite late. About 16 or 17. I just hammered away at it fow two or three years, not really getting anywhere. Then I bumped into Carl (Barat). Just sat at his feet, gobsmacked. Just taking it in and drawing on that, really.”
From Observer Music Monthly, Sunday Issue, 14 October 2007 :
“Pete: When I first met Carl [Barat, co-founder of the Libertines], I was 17 and he was about a year-and-a-half older than me. We had this song called 'France', a jazzy little number. I couldn't really play guitar then, not properly. I was convinced I was going to be the singer and he was going to be the guitarist, like Morrissey and Marr, but a few years in, he was convinced that he was going to sing as well so I had to learn the guitar.”

1998 - Relationship between Carl Barat & Amy Jo Doherty finishes but Carl and Peter remain friends.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260

September 1999 - Bull and Gate, Kentish Town, London
Set list included : Breck Road Lover / You’re My Waterloo / Music When The Lights Go Out /
Notes : Review from NME Magazine 18 September 2002 “"If lust and despair are two bullets in the same gun/The we’ve been playing Russian roulette for far too long", sings Libertines’ puppy-eyes frontman Pete, casting his poetry pearls among the meagre but appreciative onlookers with a nonchalance that belies his youth.
Fresh, wry, flowery and savage, The Libertines take their name from the Marquis de Sade’s The Lust Of The Libertines, but with a mere handful of gigs behind them they’re as much precious neophytes as twisted ol’ souls.
All light and skiffley with acoustic’n’electric guitars, cello and drums they appear to have emerged from some overgrown back alley of pop where pointy boots and suits are an option and witty dissections of love’s vicissitudes are still prized. ‘Brick Road Lover’ and ‘You’re My Waterloo’ evoke The Kinks or early Beatles, while ‘Music When The Lights Go Out’ is more anthemic.
It’s all very songwriterly and historically informed (one song mentions suicidal postwar comedian Tony Hancock) and done badly, their style of smartarse tweedy funk is an abomination, yet The Libertines make it seem like the most alluring thing since opium lollipops. With a three-boy frontline, cut from a scrapbook of classic icons – left to right, Suede-ite, Jarvis, Scott Walker – and an old guy drummer, they have a natural-born cute charisma which elevates them into the special band zone.
Proper London Oxfam aesthetes with dirty minds, dusty books, nice tunes and a future. Roger Morton ”

1999 - Band uses alter ego’s and give each other nicknames in the band. Mr Pete Spaniel, Mr Carl Spaniel, John was Mr. Combad & Paul was Mr. Razzcocks.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260

October 1999 - Prince Charles Cinema, Soho, London
Notes : Saturday Afternoon Show. From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260 “Andy Fracer said “”they were wearing suits” “it was almost skiffle, sharing one mic for vocal harmoines, but with this girl, Vicky, playing mad cello as well. She left soon after””

1999 - The Libertines acquire Co-Manager Andy Fracer.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260

1999 - Filthy Mc Nasty’s, London
Notes: From NME “There was also a brief period where Carl and Pete would play acoustic sets at Filthy McNasty's Whiskey Café near King's Cross. That was followed by a few months when they played with a 70-year-old drummer called Mr Razzcocks. Then, about two years ago, everything went totally off the rails.”

2000 - The Libertines acquire Manager Banny Poostchi.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260

2000 - Peter Doherty works at Filthy Mc Nasty’s, London and moves into flat upstairs.
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260 “he paid for the flat by selling speed he got from a hells angel from Tottenham” “Bar regulars included Rabbi, Terry the perv, Mick the ex-con”

2000 - Filthy Mc Nasty’s, London
Notes : From Observer Music Monthly, Sunday Issue, 14 October 2007 :
“Pete: In the early days of the Libertines we used to put on Arcadian cabaret nights. There'd be some girl climbing out of an egg, we'd try and get a couple of mates to tell a few jokes, performance poets, and then we'd play in the middle of it all. More people were on stage than in the crowd.”

2000 - Filthy Mc Nasty’s, London

2000 - Rough Enough Stuff Session, Studios, London
Time For Heroes / I Get Along / Horrorshow / Boys In The Band / General Smuts
Notes : Recorded by Peter and Carl circa 2000-2001. Paul Dufour had quit the band so they used a drum machine. Mainly acoustic and stripped down versions. Boys In The Band is a different composition and would later be developed into the track we know today when John and Gary re-join the band. Time For Heroes is a more delicate rendition than that we know today.
Bootleg : “2001 Rough Enough Stuff” claims to be recorded for Rough Trade. Unconfirmed source.

Notes : Johnny Borrell later forms the band “Razorlight”.

26 February 2001 - 12 Bar Club, Tin Pan Alley, UK

Notes : Early performances of many songs. Dilly Boys is more of an upbeat & quicker paced arrangement. It would be years until the release & recording of some of the songs played. Lady Don’t You Fall Backwards & Ballad Of Grimaldi are a full electric renditions with Peter and Carl singing. Seven Deadly Sins is complete with lyrics. Kitten is an unconfirmed sung by bass player John Hassall. After Kitten an unknown full band song is played with lead vocal by Peter. Lust Of The Libertines is more upbeat and quickly paced rendition. I Got Sweets is an electric full band performance and is radically different from the version released on Can’t Stand Me Now 7inch single. Practising Vandals is an unconfirmed title for the ska style unknown song sung by John. Many tracks remain unreleased & a lot of the songs and ideas were dropped (The Domestic etc.) when the band went into the studio for Rough Trade.

2001 - Banny Poostchi convinces the duo to write an E.P. of new material.
Notes : The idea was to give the duo something to do as they acquire new members and something to record and send to record companies. What A Waster and Time For Heroes are penned during this era.

2001 - Rough Trade Live Audition
Notes : From Q Magazine, March 2008, Issue Number 260 “Rough Trade A & R man, James Endeacott, listens to The Libertines audition.” “Johnny Borrell went off to Wales with Alabama 3 on the day of the audition. 21 February 2002 - W2 Cherry Jam, London
Set Included: Up The Bracket / What A Waster / Time For Heroes / I Get Along
Notes : From NME Magazine 2002 “Tonight, they arrive on stage with their backs to the audience, smoking furiously. As soon as they turn round, you can see they're so wired their eyeballs are almost touching the back wall of the club. From the start, they attack their songs with a careering momentum that leaves most of them skidding totally out of control. Think The Beatles in Hamburg at 4am in the morning.
The two guitarists - Peter (who's the spit of Julian Casablancas) and Carl (Paul McCartney) - alternate as frontmen, furiously bobbing up and down, falling into each other and collapsing in a screech of feedback. After their second song (the completely amazing 'Up The Bracket' - working title 'On The Racket'), they square up to each other and start pushing each other around. Shirts are ripped, and from here it's chaos.
With barely a thought for staying in tune or keeping the same tempo, they proceed to demolish the rest of their set. Highlights? Well, upcoming single 'What A Waster' is incredible, total London punk rock featuring the immortal lines ("What a divvy/What a fucking div/Talking like a moron/Walking like a stiff' Time For Heroes', another classic in the making, if only because it sounds like Paul Weller when he was 17 (A good thing, in case you were wondering).
Everything else is a car crash of bad attitude and breakneck melody. Such is their wide-eyed abandon, it's impossible to take your eyes off them, you don't know whether they're going to make it to the end of the song or just start punching each other. They end with 'I Get Along', their buzzing speed-freak anthem. The gig's been a mess. But it's also been the most exciting thing we've seen all year. It'll be the same when you see them. 01 May 2002 - NME Interview, Dive Bar, Soho, London
Notes : First NME Interview.
“Down here, Pete Doherty and Carl Barât - the two frontmen from Britain's greatest new band (aka The Libertines) - have just stumbled in through the door with their belts undone; for some reason their belts are always undone. They, along with bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell, have just been rioting. Or, as they prefer to call it, "celebrating".
Carl - side-parting, swarthy good looks, occasionally prone to mumbling - is rubbing his leg. He's just thrown a bottle at a policeman. In return, the policeman's just whacked him on the knees with a truncheon.
Meanwhile, Pete - staring eyes, small lips, occasionally prone to walking in front of moving cars - wants to know why we're doing their interview down here.”
"Most people fancy Carl more than they do me," he sighs. "For years I've been in his shadow, but now the worm has turned and I'm getting all the NME quotes."
"Yeah, why the fuck do you always quote Pete?" demands Carl. "Every time you ask a question, he starts yapping. And another thing, why did you call him the singer? He's a scumbag."
"Well, he does sing most of the songs," observes John.
"No he doesn't," snaps Carl. "And if he ever did, I'd have to have words about that."
There was also the small matter of them being rent boys.
"We joined this agency," explains Carl, matter-of-factly. "We thought it was called Aristocrats, but it was actually Aristocats. We thought it was taking women out to the theatre, or escorting them to dinner. But basically it was shagging old men in hotel rooms."
How was that?
Pete: "It only lasted for about five minutes. I got all dolled up, but I couldn't deal with it. I used to push the drinks trolley over and make a run for it."
After this, they decided they needed some stability. So they moved into a brothel on the Holloway Road in north London - incidentally, located above NME's Steven Wells' flat. Did they like it there?
"It was very comfortable actually," says Pete.
"Well it might have been for you..." retorts Carl.
"It was OK," continues Pete, unperturbed, "until this girl fell in love with Carl and decided I was the devil. I was working at the Prince Charles cinema in Soho and she turned up with a pair of scissors and tried to stab me in the stomach. She thought I'd stolen money, but I hadn't. That was enough to make Carl head up to Manchester."
"When I got back, though, I had to go and live with her again," shrugs Carl. "One morning she burst through the door and emptied a tin of cat food on my head. She didn't even have a cat. Sometime after that she left a note on the door, saying 'Goodbye cruel world' and I found her trying to gas herself in an electric oven."
"The whole brothel thing ended in tears really," agrees Pete. "You can't really print any of this; she's got a proper long history of mental illness. She'll see this and come looking for us."

Notes : Nine Song Setlist part of NME “Bring It On” series of shows.
From NME 2002 “They ripped through their set with an invigorating energy; they couldn’t get the music out quick enough, it was like watching a starved animal set loose. What quickly became apparent to me was how they had grown as a band. In February when I was lucky enough to catch them, they came across as a duo, ‘Pete and Carl’ with two backing musicians… now they ARE a band! An excellent one at that! They are stars in the making, if they play those industry cards right they can shine long and bright, But if they put a carefully polished ‘Retro’ adidas out of place…. They will fall on the much trodden road to rock history. In some ways though I’d like to see them stay as the shooting stars they are (no Strokes please!)….
Hell they haven’t even released a single yet and im looking to the sky!!!
By Rebecca J Coffey ” Another NME Review “The Libertines' nine-number set is short, exhilaratingly chaotic, relatively free of slack and continually walks the razor-edge between flying and falling apart. They're still about three songs and a month's gigging shy of being really great, but this nervy Maximum R&B sounds like just what we need right now. Pat Long ”
From 15 May 2002 NME Magazine “The Charlatans’ frontman Tim Burgess was in the audience, along with fashion journalist and Kate Moss’ other half Jefferson Hack and former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who produced The Libertines’ forthcoming debut single ‘What A Waster’. He told NME.COM The Libertines are an "Amazing band, with great songs, the album's going to be superb." Tickets to the gig were only available to NME readers through a competition on NME.COM. Winners who got there early witnessed young Brighton band The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, who played a violently loud set. At one point, singer Guy McKnight jumped off the stage, climbed on to the bar and continued his performance. The Libertines have only played a handful of gigs and don’t release their debut single ‘What A Waster’/‘I Get Along’ until June 3. While not known so far for their accomplished musicianship, The Libertines have clearly been rehearsing hard – and the audience showed their appreciation. Last night’s wired performance was a world away from their earlier chaotic gigs, and comparisons with The Strokes were soon being made among the audience – not least for The Libertines’ similar, suited look.
But last night The Libertines proved with songs like ‘What A Waster’ and ‘I Get Along’ that they have their own distinctive sound, which borrows cheekily from late Seventies punk, 80s new wave and even Britpop. Many in the packed venue were clearly already committed fans of The Libertines, with some even sporting the same look as the band. ”

From Q Magazine, September issue 2007 interview with Peter:
Q : Do you live your songs or sing your life?
PD : Well, take What A Waster. Line by line, verse by verse, every line of that began to ring true over time. But when I first wrote it I was a clean-living lad, to be honest.
Q : It became a self-fulfilling prophecy? PD : Completely, yeah.
From NME Interview “Things are about to unravel. First, though, we manage to ask them whether 'What A Waster' is about anyone in particular.
"Yeah," responds Pete instantly, "it's about you. And me. And her (points to girl over the other side of the bar). And his mum (points to Carl). Of course, it is. I played it to my dad and he started eating my cigarettes. I've never seen him like that before. He was eating cigarettes and telling me to fuck off. He started dancing around the room and saying it reminded him of the Goldhawk Road in 1969. They were German, you know."”

Notes : From The Guardian Newspaper 10 June 2002 “The Libertines are the latest group to be thrust into the ring as the industry tries to find a UK guitar band capable of taking on the Strokes. Their cherubic, mischievous looks pout from a Union flag on the cover of this week's NME, and the foursome have been dubbed "the best new band in Britain", despite the fact that they have only just released their first single. The rabble-rousing You're a Waster is expected to enter the Top 40, despite a radio ban (courtesy of good old-fashioned swearing) and the fact that few people outside London have seen them play.
That is changing, but slowly. The Cockpit is half-full. The Libertines arrive late, slouch on in tight leather jackets and turn their backs on the audience. But as soon as they plug in their guitars, the transformation is extraordinary. As each song is delivered, the foursome - fronted by guitarist-vocalists Carl Bart and Pete Doherty, begin to shake violently.
Behind the bluster and hype surrounding them, the Libertines have a fighting chance. They are young, moderately, if scruffily, good looking and hilarious. Their interviews consist of tall tales about pasts as rent boys.
The gig is a lesson in brevity. They play seven songs (or rather seven short, sharp shocks). The entire show lasts less than half an hour. Their deranged guitar solos sound like 33 rpm punk albums speeded up to 45. Their biggest influence seems to be Razor Cuts-era Buzzcocks (although older cynics will mutter about Jilted John). I Get Along sounds like a riot in a living room; You're a Waster, an accusatory rant against a druggie female, could start the proverbial argument in a phone booth. Their success will depend on UK youth's capacity for yet another spunky, punky band to file alongside the Strokes and Hives. The Libertines leave without an encore, although there's just enough here to suggest we will be hearing more. Notes : From NME Review 2002 “Are the Libertines the best band ever? Well, the NME seems to think so and judging by the amount of ‘cool’ people in the crowd (lots of Strokes look-alikes, funny hair, that sort of thing), this message seems to have spread to the world beyond. And they all want to be impressed, which is always a problem for bands when there’s no energy from the crowd to feed off and, as a result, the Libertines suffer tonight.
It could also be, of course, that the rock ‘n’ roll effects of touring have had an adverse affect on the group, as guitarist/vocalist Carl looked decidedly worse for wear when we chatted before the gig. The sound is muddy, the onstage antics a little muted, at least from what I could see. It’s a shame, because debut single 'What A Waster/I Get Along' is an impressive slab of mod-punk noise but tonight neither song is really done much justice, though 'What A Waster' still has the best opening line ever: 'What a waster/what a fucking waster/you pissed it all up the wall.' They do have a nice twin vocal assault, with Pete sounding like Paul Weller and Carl like Howard Devoto and the guitars hum with that Britpop-y, early Blur combination of mod and punk to create a sound that is frankly nothing at all like the Strokes.
Will the Libertines turn out to be the best band ever? It’s much to early to say but let’s hope that the lines from 'What A Waster' don’t turn out to be self-reflexively true.
High Point: 'What A Waster', for the swearing.
Low Point: Lack of seeing... a full Roadhouse doesn't afford much viewing space.”

13 June 2002 - Barfly, Cardiff
14 June 2002 - Metropolis Lounge, Peterborough
27 June 2002 - “Death Disco” The Metro, London
Horrorshow / Up The Bracket / Vertigo / What A Waster / Mayday / 'Time For Heroes / Boys In The Band / I Get Along
Notes: Secret Show. Death Disco was regular event organised by, future manager, Alan McGee. Band came onstage approx 12.30am.
From Review “The wonder and allure that forms a ‘secret gig’ is often quite hard to not get excited over. Prince (or ‘symbol’, or whatever that little guy is called these days) cherishes the chance to turn up unannounced at venues and perform red-hot shows to a selected few that are just lucky enough to be there at the time, as do Blur, who frequently use such occasions as launch-pads for their new material, testing it out on fans’ ears before the rest of the world becomes exposed to it.
As it happens, tonight, we are experiencing one of these special events, except with a London-based four-piece that the UK press has been getting quite comfy with – The Libertines. Rockfeedback was informed of this impending show in London’s Metro club, to be played during one of Alan McGee’s ‘Death Disco’ punk-themed evenings, just a couple of hours prior to its actual occurrence after the receipt of a mysterious phone-call. When we eventually arrive to the venue later on, it’s 12am and the band aren’t due onstage for a further half-hour. Anticipation is rising – as are the levels of alcohol being consumed, with certain audience-members intoxicated to the point of that much-feared of drunken states: yes, dancing in public. And it ain’t pretty.
Rewardingly, some moments later, more enticing is the sight of our four men walking (or swaying) into vision. People lazily applaud and the group immediately set into action, delivering a foaming-at-the-mouth rendition of ‘Horror Show’, complete with microphones knocked over carelessly and one of the frontmen, Pete Doherty, having to sing the words into the air without the aid of amplification. His guitar then cuts out. As does Carl Barat’s, too. Oh dear. Yet this is just a deceptive beginning – for, after this, events begin to go startlingly to plan, the band’s extraordinary energy reassuringly channelled to the boys playing their instruments as opposed to unplugging them in a momentary daze. The specific ensuing assault enjoyed consists of single ‘What A Waster’, played with all the pride and passion you’d hope of a quartet that have recently unleashed it into the top-40, and melodic symphonies such as ‘Up The Bracket’ and ‘Time For Heroes’, complemented best when smacked alongside such rock ‘n’ roll groovers as the riffs-a-plenty howls of ‘Boys In The Band’ and ‘Vertigo’ – let alone the bull-in-a-china-shop thrash of ‘Mayday’. As it all goes off and the audience begin the distressing dancing again for a final ‘I Get Along’, the framework of the group, as ably provided by John Hassall’s continually sturdy bass and Gary Powell’s unfathomably tight (and dangerous) drumming, is pretty much the only thing which bears coherence as Barat and Doherty wrestle with their guitars until a thunderous close and a loud cheer lets up. Phew, what a racket. And the last song is effectively The Libertines down to a tee: a not particularly ordered riot of subconscious postures, tuneful yet hoarse vocals, and a clutch of songs that have the potential to define Britain’s musical 2002. It may have been a secret gig witnessed here this evening – but the lid on The Libertines’ potential power isn’t gonna be kept closed for long. Toby L ”

Introduction by Steve Lamaq / Up The Bracket / What A Waster / Vertigo / Mayday / Time For Heroes / Death On The Stairs / Boys In The Band / I Get Along
Notes : BBC Radio 1 Broadcast ? Fan Review by Charlie Goldthorpe
“The Southern voice of Mr Lamacq thunders down the microphone the introduction of the new rebels on the musical block ‘The Libertines’.
The leather clad mop atop scruffy Londoners slovenly take to the stage and pick up their instruments with the ease they have done a thousand times before and strike the first tinny chords to ‘Horror Show’.
The last time they played Rock City was two weeks ago supporting Supergrass, but the crowds acceptance was much more appreciative and felt by the band as they rocked their way through latest single release ’Up the Bracket’ and classic ’What a Waster’.
Carl and Pete standing opposite each other glares locked, who knows what these boys would do if they weren’t holding their guitars!
Ploughing their way through a delectable set featuring many of the raucous album tracks which prove they‘re worth all the media hype they’ve attracted.
Gritting teeth in conjunction with sweat pouring down their faces Carl and Pete continue to switch microphones jostling each other out the way for pride of ‘stage’ place.
Concluding with twice produced ‘I Get Along’ Carl has the crowd chanting the proverbial lyrics towards him, whilst Pete shakes his bird nest of a hair do along with a gormless pouting expression to boot.
Unfortunately for them nobody ‘got them out for the boys in the band’, however drummer Gary had a lovely pair on display for the rather receptive Nottingham spectators.”

The Libertines record & rehearse in studio. The Babyshambles Sessions is a set of songs recorded by The Libertines while in New York. The singer and guitarist Carl Barât left before completion of the tapes, which were intended for the second album. Then John left leaving Peter and Gary to use up the rest of the studio time. It is thought that Carl Barat played drums on some tracks too.
The Jam Session was recorded after Carl had left the sessions. Recordings were released online. Recordings were released in three separate packages, each one meant for one disc each.
Fans Say “Doherty gave the tapes to Helen Hsu, a fan, at the Chelsea Hotel in New York. She, at his request, made the tracks available to the band's fans over the internet.”

What’s It Like : This version was recorded just after Pete was ejected from the Libs for the final time. It’s an uncomfortable-but revealing snapshot of Pete’s state of mind. At this time, he clearly blamed the people around Carl for the split (“You twist and tore our love apart” becomes “They twist and pulled…”). It closes with a paranoid belief that it‘s not only The Libertines machine against him, but the world (“I read every review/They all prefer you”) Only for the voyeuristic. Where to find it: www.albionarks.com ‘Branding Sessions’”

March 2004 - Pete went into rehab for the third time whilst making the second LP.

Peter commented to the media at the time “"We wouldn't have stuck together and recorded that album if it hadn't been for Mick [Jones]. I don't think I was particularly excessive during that album. Occasionally I'd come in and just sleep"”
Carl commented to the media at the time "There's always been that sense of collapse with us, although this album was a struggle to do. We knew when we were doing it that there were situations around the actual work that were making things difficult. It really is a miracle that our new album got finished"
Roger Sargent (photographer and author of the album cover photo) commented about the recording sessions in media saying "Somebody had a number for someone to come down and literally in the middle of the recording like every minute Carl would stop and go, Have you got that number? I could really do with some coke, man! And then Pete came up to the mic and said, Would someone get my fucking guitarist some cocaine?!?"

Notes : From NME Magazine 29 May 2004 “Bandmate, Carl Barat has been paying regular visits to The Priory, and along with other friends took Doherty a selection of NME readers‘ letters of support with them. On his first visit last Tuesday (May 18), Barat took Pete a present of Queens Park Rangers FC swimming trunks and a towel so they could go swimming together in the private pool. Doherty is a lifelong QPR fan and used to write a club fanzine “All quiet on the western avenue. However, outside visiting hours, Doherty‘s time in The Priory has been an emotional and physical rollercoaster.” The guitarist spent the early part of the week communicating with fans via his laptop, posting on his website www.babyshambles.com”
Doherty wrote “the doctors and nurses have said my constitution is a marvel of modern scienece. The detox programme I‘m on is capable of bringing the entire Russian Olympic team to its knees. I do believe the worst is yet to come, so it‘s either make a break for it now or bite the pillow time” “Very deranged and murky recollection for the last few days. A gaggle of nurses around my crinkly bed, they all jump as I wake up and yelp something about jelly. Then I notice a needle sticking out of my arm and spots of blood. What the fuck is going on? Vomit and shrieks, some girl warbling down the corridor in a towel. I have so many days past, what has happened?”
“Evidence of self harm upon my skinny person but nothing could be further from my mind as I awake brighter tailed and bushier eyed than I have done for many a year. Yes children, the deliriums and catawailings are giving in to well, Peter Doherty, whoever the fuck that may be.”
“I‘m definitely steadier on my feet and shall have a little exploration of this clean place, which is probably full of celebrities in towelling robes. Enough to make anyone give up crack and smack. Still on heavy detox tablature. I‘ve decided to give this crackless life a crack so adieu…a stroll around the ground is in order”

From XFM.co.uk “Barat and his Dirty Pretty bandmates have been out in LA for the past few months working on tracks for the follow up to their 2006 debut.
Dirty Pretty Things' manager, Alan McGee has been speaking to Xfm from LA where he been spending time with band, and he reckons this album’s shaping up to be a cracker.
"It's great", McGee enthused, "We've got five or six really big songs this time on the album whereas on the last album there was maybe only one really stand out big hit.
"It's really different as well", he continued, "Much more arty and much more pop. It's good and a really big change for them, it's much more melodic." He also revealed that there’s plenty of potential singles on there with tentative track titles including ‘Come Close’ ‘Plastic Hearts’ ‘Blood Red Shoes’ and ‘Fault lines’. But don’t get too excited just yet. McGee reckons we won’t be able to sample the goods until at least spring time of next year. ”
From NME Magazine October 2007 “Short interview on the new issue of the NME (thanks to Linna for the transcription):
NME: Hi Carl. So you’re in LA recording the second Dirty Pretty Things album. How’s everything going in the States:
C: Great thanks. I’m really excited about making this album - it’s going really well, and I’ve found some good bars. There’s one called The Cock and Bull, and a dirty pub called the King’s Head. it’s really manky - just like an English pub. But last night we went bowling and ended up getting spanked with some rednecks, so I’m not feeling so good today.
NME Do you get homesick?
C: Yeah I miss England’s miserable weather. I’m not joking, I do. I like the passions you see in the seasons all year round - it’s a bit unnatural here - the weather’s always the same. Say Hi to Blighty for me. (Hi back from Blighty - Linna xx)
NME: So how’s the new album sounding?
C: We’re moving fast - we’ve done 20 songs. We’re not recording the album live - it’s the first time I’ve recorded like that. There’s some string effects. I think it’ll be easier on the ear, but by no means easy listening.
NME: Would you fancy playing an arena tour this time around, Babyshambles style?
C: Not really, I find arenas so impersonal. It’s a bit much for me.
NME If not musical-writing any plans for working with Pete again soon?
C: Maybe we’ll do something together, I don’t really know. I’m trying not to overshadow this album. Could we get together at a summer festival? Ha ha maybe, although I wouldn’t know about it until five minutes before it happened
NME We’ll hear more about the album soon but what’s the title going to be
C: Hmm maybe “this is where the truth begins”. Or possibly something inspired by last night’s events - Getting Spanked by the Yanks. ”

From NME Magazine October 2007 “Carl Barat Short interview (thanks to Linna for the transcription): NME Have you been in touch with Pete?
C: Not for ages actually, not since the Sgt Pepper thing (the pair covered The Beatles’ A Day In the Life for Radio 2 in June). His manager phoned me up recently and said he wanted me to write a musical with Pete. Pete was approached, so he wanted to see if I would get involved. It wouldn’t be a Libertines musical - it’d probably be a comedy. But I’m busy with the album right now. Maybe one day, it’d be fun!

The film was shown at selected cinemas for a limited time only, including Odeon Cinemas.
From General Store Product Description “Documentary that follows the 2010 reunion shows of The Libertines and explores the tensions that led to their demise as a band. The Libertines were active between 1997 and 2004 and gained some acclaim for their influential brand of indie rock. However, tensions in the band - largely stemming from the drug abuse of co-frontman, Pete Doherty - led them to break up shortly after carving a niche for themselves in the mainstream. The film is directed by Roger Sargent, a confidant of the band, and features interviews with Doherty and Carl Barat as well as footage of the band in performance at the 2010 Reading and Leeds festivals. ”
